Operators and calltakers in the emergency centres 112 and 101 answer every year over 6 million calls. They are always there to help you when you are in distress. They reassure you, they tell you what to do and they notify the necessary emergency services. Yet, too many people still call the emergency centres for inanities. In Belgium more than one out of four calls to an emergency centre isn't a real emergency call. These unnecessary calls vary from demands for contact information to ‘jokes', but our operators sometimes also need to endure floods of abuse.
When you call the emergency services without a valid reason, the emergency centres can't take the calls of people who really are in distress. These people therefore need to wait longer for an answer and thus also for the emergency services.
Help us reduce the number of unnecessary calls to the emergency numbers by telling your family and friends when and how they can make an emergency call. Share the 112 infographic via Twitter "CivilSecurityBe" of Facebook "Intérieur - Binnenlandse Zaken".
